Project
WaterBot – AI-Enabled Robotic Trash Boat
WaterBot is a solar-powered robotic trash boat designed to autonomously harvest floating debris — plastics, algae, duckweed — from polluted urban water bodies. Equipped with a front mesh collection ramp, Arduino-based LoRa remote control, brushless motor propulsion, and onboard water quality sensors (pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen), it functions as both a cleanup vehicle and a swimming laboratory. The full-scale design integrates LiDAR, depth sounder, P4 multispectral camera, and RTK sensor for AI-driven autonomous navigation. Built by Team THREADRIPPERZS at SIH 2022 Grand Finale for the National Mission for Clean Ganga.

Technologies Used
Problem
Local water bodies such as lakes, canals, and urban drains are being heavily polluted with plastic waste, chemical runoff, and invasive aquatic growth (algae, duckweed). This blocks sunlight penetration, destroys aquatic ecosystems, and makes water bodies unusable. Manual cleanup is slow, expensive, and hazardous. The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) needed an autonomous, scalable solution for continuous trash harvesting from urban drains.
Approach
- •Designed a boat-hull UWV with foam flotation and a front-mounted mesh collection ramp that scoops floating debris as the bot moves forward
- •Implemented dual power: solar panels for sustained operation and lead-acid batteries for backup, making the system eco-friendly and emission-free
- •Built a remote control system using Arduino Uno + LoRa module (baud 19200) for long-range wireless communication, with Bluetooth for short-range testing
- •Integrated brushless DC motors with ESC (Electronic Speed Controller) for propulsion
- •Equipped the bot as a 'swimming laboratory' with sensors for real-time water quality monitoring: pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen levels
- •Full-scale design included LiDAR sensor for obstacle detection, depth sounder for navigation safety, P4 multispectral camera for trash detection, and RTK sensor for precise GPS positioning
- •Designed AI-OPS pipeline for autonomous trash detection and collection path planning
- •Built the prototype hull from foam board and acrylic, with mesh intake filter system for debris collection
Outcome
- •Successfully built and demonstrated a working prototype during the 5-day SIH 2022 Grand Finale
- •Prototype collected floating debris and operated on both solar and battery power
- •Water quality sensor integration demonstrated real-time pH, salinity, and dissolved oxygen readings
- •LoRa remote control achieved reliable communication for manual override and navigation
- •Project later extended into an MSME pitch deck for potential commercialization as a scalable urban drain cleaning solution
- •Selected as national finalist from thousands of teams at Smart India Hackathon 2022 Hardware Edition
